We are thrilled to welcome Andrew to our mixology team! Check out his blog at <a href=\"http:\/\/caskstrength.wordpress.com\/\">Cask Strength<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of blogs \u2026 on my blog <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kathycasey.com\/blog\">Dishing with Kathy Casey<\/a>, we will have some new guest bloggers such as <a href=\"http:\/\/cocktailquest.blogspot.com\/\">Cocktail Quests<\/a>\u2019 Courtney Randall, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.libertybars.com\/\">Liberty Bar<\/a> co-owner Andrew Friedman and cake lover <a href=\"..\/?p=1914\">Josie Plath<\/a>. We have new posts and recipes every week and we hope you visit often.<\/p>\n<p>It seems I\u2019ve barely been home for 2 seconds lately, so here is a glimpse of my spring adventures. I\u2019ll be excited to report back mid-summer with new travels, tales and tasty recipes!<\/p>\n<h2><strong><strong>Tales of the Cocktail on Tour: Vancouver<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Tales of the Cocktail has moved into international territory and broken from its New Orleans roots this past March. Tales Vancouver was hosted at the beautiful <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fairmont.com\/pacificrim\">Fairmont Pacific Rim Hotel<\/a> in British Columbia. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.talesofthecocktail.com\/info\/totc_vancouver_2011\">Tales on Tour<\/a> was set for a different, yet fun and refreshing change of pace. (Definitely not as many sun glasses worn at the early morning seminars!)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter lazyload\" data-src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3054\/5710497571_04d9e98075_m.jpg\" alt=\"TotC_Van_swag\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" \/><br \/>\n<strong>Mass cocktail swag from TOTC: Vancouver!!!!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The whole event kicked off with a Canadian Professional Bartenders Association (CPBA) Welcome Reception held at the Vancouver Aquarium. Master mixologist <a href=\"http:\/\/vancouver.about.com\/od\/barsnightlife\/tp\/Vancouvers-Best-Cocktails-Top-10-Spots-For-Original-Vancouver-Cocktails.htm\">David Wolowidnyk<\/a> of WEST Restaurant &amp; Bar as well as Director &amp; Treasure of the CPBA shook up and stirred lots of great drinks while demonstrating his mastery and finesse of the Japanese bartending techniques.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter lazyload\" data-src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3559\/5710497451_39e551257a_m.jpg\" alt=\"David_Wolowidnyk\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" \/><strong><br \/>\nMixologist David Wolowidnyk stirring a tasty concoction!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The rest of my time there was spent attending amazing seminars by such cocktail luminaries as tiki god Jeff \u201cBeachbum\u201d Berry. Jeff is a total tiki beverage historian. His CSI-style seminar took us through the various origins of the Mai Tai cocktail and helped us come to our own conclusions. Too fun!!!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter lazyload\" data-src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2261\/5711059130_d7f4fd156c_m.jpg\" alt=\"Beachbum_Berry\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" \/><br \/>\n<strong>Beachbum Berry holding up his book <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Sippin-Safari-Search-Tropical-Recipes\/dp\/1593620675\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1304550758&amp;sr=8-1\">Sippin\u2019 Safari<\/a>!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I then geeked out with Dave Arnold at <em>The Science of Cocktails: New Techniques Behind the Bar<\/em> followed by an informative and fun seminar on <em>The History and Importance of Ice in Cocktails<\/em> by renowned mixologist Charlotte Voisey and Jon Santer.<\/p>\n<p>It was definitely great to have Tales up in the Pacific Northwest- my neck of the woods. I can\u2019t wait for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.talesofthecocktail.com\/\">Tales of the Cocktail<\/a> this summer, July 20-24 in New Orleans, Louisiana where I will be presenting a seminar on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.talesofthecocktail.com\/functions\/totc_nola_2011\/quo\/seminars\">H2O Cocktails<\/a> with the Modern Mixologist Tony Abou-Ganim and master distiller Thomas Kuuttanen from Purity Vodka. Come shake some fun up with us and get your tickets soon!<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Mom 2.0 Summit Conference<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In April I headed to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mom2summit.com\/\">Mom 2.0 Summit Conference<\/a>! This huge conference was held in beautiful New Orleans, Louisiana. (I sure seem to be spending a lot of time there!) My team and I were there with <a href=\"http:\/\/almondaccents.com\/\">Almond Accents<\/a>. We whipped up lunch for 400 people, passed out some delicious snacks and bites at the booth and met lots of great people. He guided attendees through a spirited tasting of orange liquors and a sampling of Dale\u2019s cocktails. Cointreau also announced the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.saveur.com\/cointreau-new\/contestIndex.jsp\">2011 Mix-Off Competition<\/a> where I get to be an expert mentor for the finals at Tales of the Cocktail. If my mixologist wins not only do they get a trip to France \u2013 but I do too! Afterwards we served up some of Dale\u2019s cocktails. It\u2019s always an honor to see Dale and watch him work.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter lazyload\" data-src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3320\/5710497247_1a442c45f7_m.jpg\" alt=\"Dale_and_Kathy\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong> <\/strong><strong>Dale and I enjoying a cocktail!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Here is a one of my favorite Dale DeGroff cocktails:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bitter Rose <\/strong><br \/>\n1\/2 oz Cointreau<br \/>\n2 ounces Plymouth Gin<br \/>\n1\/2 oz Roses Lime Juice<br \/>\n1\/4 oz fresh lime juice<br \/>\n1\/4 oz Fernet Branca<br \/>\nDash of Grenadine<br \/>\nGarnish: rose petal<\/p>\n<p>Directions: Assemble all ingredients in a Boston shaker filled with ice and shake well. They asked celebrated chefs and restaurant owners Rachel Yang of Joule\/Revel and Amy McCray of Eva to team up and lead an interactive cooking demo using only food bank ingredients. I was happy to be asked to emcee the event. It was amazing to see and taste the amazing dishes they cooked up for a great cause.
