{"id":5639,"date":"2016-01-28T15:01:37","date_gmt":"2016-01-28T23:01:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kathycasey.com\/blog\/?p=5639"},"modified":"2016-01-28T15:01:37","modified_gmt":"2016-01-28T23:01:37","slug":"sipping-scandinavian","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dishingwithkathycasey.com\/?p=5639","title":{"rendered":"Sipping Scandinavian"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ballard, long known for its rich Scandinavian heritage, has a new exhibit at the <a href=\"http:\/\/nordicmuseum.org\/exhibitions\/skal\" target=\"_blank\">Nordic Heritage Museum<\/a> called SKAL (pronounced \u201csk-OOL\u201d) Scandinavian Spirits.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/nordicmuseum.org\/exhibitions\/skal\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5644 size-medium aligncenter lazyload\" data-src=\"http:\/\/kathycasey.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Skal-300x198.png\" alt=\"Skal\" width=\"300\" height=\"198\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/198;\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nThis exhibition explores the cultural history of Scandinavian libations, the most famous being <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Akvavit\" target=\"_blank\">aquavit<\/a> (sometimes spelled &#8220;akvavit&#8221;). I can tell you that it\u2019s delicious! And being a good Scandinavian myself, I&#8217;ve drank my fair share of it and I am thrilled to see this sip become hip.<\/p>\n<p>But what is it? Aquavit, like vodka, is a spirit distilled from either grain or potatoes. After distillation, it is distinctive flavor comes from a blend of herbs and spices like caraway, fennel, and dill.<\/p>\n<p>Great for sipping, I also like to add this into cocktails from Nordic-themed Bloody Mary&#8217;s as well as in my <b>Citrus Scandi<\/b> (aquavit, vodka, Cointreau, orange, and fresh grapefruit).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5640\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/kathycasey.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/liquid_kitchen_oyster_shooters.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5640\" class=\"wp-image-5640 size-medium lazyload\" data-src=\"http:\/\/kathycasey.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/liquid_kitchen_oyster_shooters-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Citrus Scandi Cocktails and Citrus Splash fresh oysters!\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/169;\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5640\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><b>Citrus Scandis &amp; fresh oysters with a Citrus Splash!<br \/>For recipes, check out <a href=\"http:\/\/smallscreennetwork.com\/video\/792\/liquid-kitchen-citrus-scandi-oysters\" target=\"_blank\">this episode<\/a> of Liquid Kitchen.<\/b><\/p><\/div>\n<p>What&#8217;s really exciting is that the Northwest is producing some pretty great aquavit: Portland\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/housespirits.com\/spirits\/krogstad-festlig-aquavit\/\" target=\"_blank\">House Spirits<\/a> produces Krogstad and in Seattle the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oldballardliquorco.com\/products.htm#aquavit\" target=\"_blank\">Old Ballard Liquor Company<\/a> crafts several unique styles of aquavit.<\/p>\n<p>Old Ballard Liquor Company proprietor Lexi is also the visionary behind the pop-up restaurant <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tumbleswede.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tumble Swede<\/a>, which celebrates a mash-up of Scandinavian and Pacific Northwest cuisine.
